Best PUBG Weapons Guide

Highest AR damage

Mk47 Mutant at 49, then AKM at 47.

Best all-round

An AR plus a DMR still covers the most situations.

Crate gap

The AWM is the only gun that kills through a Level 3 helmet in one shot.

PUBG splits weapons into assault rifles, marksman rifles, SMGs, snipers, shotguns and pistols, and most players win more fights by understanding the role each class plays than by chasing a single "best gun". That said, the numbers do matter, and a lot of common advice repeats figures that stopped being true several patches ago. Everything below is the current data, and you can put any two guns side by side in our weapon comparison tool.

Assault Rifles: the Numbers That Matter

Among rifles you can find on the ground, the Mk47 Mutant leads on raw damage at 49, followed by the AKM at 47 and the Beryl M762 at 44. The 5.56mm rifles sit lower — M416 at 40, SCAR-L and QBZ95 at 42, AUG A3 and G36C at 41 — but they fire faster and kick less, which is why the M416 still ends most "best AR" arguments in practice. Note the trade in the table below: the AKM does more per bullet but the M416 lands more bullets per second, and their DPS ends up within a few points of each other.

Why 7.62mm Does Not Automatically Win

The damage gap between 7.62mm and 5.56mm is real but smaller than it looks. An AKM needs three body shots on an unarmoured target and five through a Level 3 vest; an M416 needs three and six. That is a one-bullet difference in the worst case, and the M416 fires roughly 100 rounds per minute faster with noticeably less recoil. If you cannot hold the AKM steady past the fourth round, the paper advantage disappears. Pick the calibre you can actually control at the range your route creates.

Marksman Rifles Cover What Rifles Cannot

A DMR turns mid-range pressure into real damage. The SLR hits for 56 and the SKS for 53, both on 7.62mm; the Mini 14 and QBU trade power for flatter, faster 5.56mm shots at 48. The Mk14 EBR sits above all of them at 61 but only comes from crates and secret rooms. An AR plus DMR remains the most flexible loadout in the game precisely because it answers both the building clear and the ridge-line peek.

When SMGs Are Better

SMGs are strongest when fights are short and messy. The UMP45 is the standout at 41 damage — higher than the M416 — and it stays controllable. The Vector fires fastest in the class but only holds 19 rounds without an extended magazine, and the Micro UZI trades everything for rate of fire at 26 damage. If you drop into dense compounds or expect repeated building pushes, an SMG will beat a rifle in your hands. The mistake is carrying one alone into open ground.

Snipers and the One-Shot Rule

This is where crate weapons genuinely change a match. The AWM deals 262.5 to an unprotected head and still 118.1 through a Level 3 helmet — the only weapon in PUBG that kills a fully armoured player with one headshot. The Kar98k and Mosin Nagant both sit at 79 and hit a Level 3 helmet for 88.8, which is also lethal against an undamaged helmet, while the M24 lands 75. Ground-loot bolt actions are strong; the AWM is in its own category, which is why it only comes from air drops and secret rooms.

Choosing by Map

Small, dense maps reward close-range handling, so an SMG or a fast 5.56mm rifle pays off. Large maps reward clean mid-range pressure, which is where the AR plus DMR pairing earns its reputation. Beyond that, let the route decide: if your rotation runs through buildings, carry something you can swing quickly indoors; if it runs along ridges, carry something that reaches.

Do Not Build Around Rare Weapons Too Early

Crate weapons are excellent when you already have them, but planning a whole match around finding one is how players end up under-equipped at the first fight. Take the good common weapon now, and treat the Groza or AWM as an upgrade you take if the route happens to pass a secret room with a key in hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the highest damage assault rifle in PUBG?

The Mk47 Mutant at 49 damage per shot, narrowly ahead of the AKM at 47. Among crate weapons the Groza also sits at 47 but fires considerably faster. Raw damage is only half the picture though — the Mutant is burst-only, so its practical damage output trails the fully automatic rifles.

AKM or M416 — which is better?

The AKM hits for 47 against the M416’s 40, but the M416 fires faster and recoils less, so their DPS lands at 470 against 465. On an unarmoured target both need three body shots; through a Level 3 vest the AKM needs five and the M416 six. Take the AKM if you can control 7.62mm recoil, the M416 if you cannot.

Which weapon can one-shot a Level 3 helmet?

Only the AWM. It deals 118.1 to a head behind a Level 3 helmet, above the 100 health threshold. The Kar98k, Mosin Nagant and M24 all land 88.8 in the same situation — enough to kill through a damaged helmet, but not a fresh one.

Where do these numbers come from?

From The PUBG Wiki, which tracks weapon stats patch by patch; the figures here are from patch 22.2.8.1. Nothing is estimated, and a dash means the source does not publish that value. You can compare any two weapons yourself in our weapon comparison tool.
