PUBG Throwables Guide

Frag fuse

Five seconds — cook it or it gets thrown back.

Smoke

The utility that saves the most lives.

Blue Zone Grenade

10 m radius, 10 damage per second.

Throwables are where a lot of PUBG fights are quietly won. Utility changes the fight before bullets do: it blocks sight, denies cover, forces movement and creates the safe seconds you need to revive or reposition. Players who ignore throwables need better aim just to break even against teams that use them.

The Throwables and Their Timings

The frag grenade runs on a five second fuse, which is long enough that an uncooked grenade thrown into a building often comes straight back out. The stun grenade detonates in 2.5 seconds, making it the faster entry tool. Smoke and Molotovs have no meaningful fuse decision — they do their work where they land.

Smoke Wins the Most Matches

Smoke is the best utility in PUBG because it solves problems nothing else can: reviving a teammate in the open, crossing a road that a sniper owns, leaving a building you should not have entered, or breaking contact when a fight has gone wrong. It does no damage, which is exactly why it is undervalued. If you carry one type of throwable, carry this one, and carry more than one.

Frags Punish Predictability

A frag grenade is not a killing tool so much as a moving tool. Thrown at someone holding a corner, a window or a downed teammate, it forces them to leave a position they had chosen carefully. The five second fuse is the detail that matters: cooking for two seconds before throwing removes the window in which an opponent can move away or throw it back. Cook over water or a wall you are behind, never in the open.

Stuns Are Entry Tools, Not Damage

A stun grenade blinds and deafens anyone looking near it for a few seconds. That is only useful if someone follows it in immediately — a stun thrown without an entry just tells the room you are coming. Its 2.5 second fuse is short enough to throw and push almost in one motion, which is why it belongs to whoever is entering, not whoever is holding back.

Molotovs Lock Space

A Molotov is the answer to a stubborn hold. It denies the ground itself rather than the person, which means it works on cover you cannot see behind: a doorway, a stairwell, the back of a rock. It also punishes players who heal in place. The counter-use matters too — a Molotov behind you as you break contact makes following you expensive.

Situational Throwables

The Blue Zone Grenade creates a ten metre blue circle dealing 10 damage per second, holding full size for five seconds before shrinking over another five. Its damage stacks with the actual blue zone, which makes it useful for flushing a building without entering it. The Decoy Grenade produces ten seconds of fake gunfire and appears only on Sanhok and Karakin, and not in ranked. The Sticky Bomb exists mainly to blow breach points in Karakin walls and floors.

Carry More Than You Think

The usual mistake is carrying one smoke and no frags because the inventory felt full. Throwables cost less space than a Med Kit at 20 and change more fights. If you are choosing between a fourth First Aid Kit and two smokes, take the smokes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the frag grenade fuse in PUBG?

Five seconds. That is long enough for an opponent to move away or throw it back, which is why cooking the grenade for a second or two before releasing is standard practice when clearing a room.

What is the best throwable in PUBG?

Smoke grenades, by a wide margin, because they solve problems no weapon can: reviving in the open, crossing sniper-covered ground and breaking contact. Frags kill more, but smokes prevent more deaths.

How much damage does the Blue Zone Grenade do?

Ten damage per second to anyone inside its ten metre radius. It stays at full size for five seconds, then shrinks and disappears over another five. Its damage stacks with the real blue zone if you are caught in both.

Where can I find Decoy Grenades?

They appear as rare world loot on Sanhok and on Karakin, and are not available in ranked mode. When thrown they emit gunshot sounds for about ten seconds. They do not work underwater.
