PUBG Beginner Guide
First goal
Survive twenty minutes, not win the first fight.
Loot order
Weapon, vest, helmet, bag, meds, then attachments.
Easiest guns
M416 and SCAR-L on 5.56mm.
PUBG punishes new players less for bad aim than for bad decisions: landing into a fight they cannot win, looting past the point of usefulness, and rotating when the zone is already on top of them. The fastest improvement is not mechanical. It is learning which decisions actually matter, in what order.
Land Somewhere You Can Finish Looting
Your first goal is a full loadout and a live character at the ten minute mark, which means avoiding the biggest names on the map to begin with. On Erangel, Rozhok and Novorepnoye give you real loot with survivable traffic; Gatka and Lipovka give you near-total safety at the cost of a long walk. Pochinki and Georgopol will teach you close-range fighting and very little else, because you will rarely be equipped when the first fight starts.
Loot in Priority Order
Pick up things in the order that keeps you alive. A weapon with ammunition first, then a vest, then a helmet, then a backpack, then medical items, and attachments last. The reason is simple: a Level 1 vest reduces incoming damage by 30% and a Level 3 by 55%, while a compensator changes nothing if you are already dead. Once you have a workable set, leave. The most common beginner death is looting a fourth building because it is there.
Start With Controllable Weapons
Consistency beats raw damage while you are learning. The M416 at 40 damage and the SCAR-L at 42 fire 5.56mm and are much easier to hold on target than 7.62mm rifles like the AKM at 47. The single extra bullet the AKM saves you means nothing if the recoil takes the other four off target. Pair one of these with a marksman rifle such as the SKS or Mini 14 once you are comfortable, and use the weapon comparison tool to see how any two guns actually compare.
| Weapon | Ammo | Damage | Why it suits beginners |
|---|---|---|---|
| M416 | 5.56mm | 40 | Lowest recoil of the common rifles |
| SCAR-L | 5.56mm | 42 | Slightly harder hitting, still controllable |
| UMP45 | .45 ACP | 41 | Strongest SMG, forgiving indoors |
| Mini 14 | 5.56mm | 48 | Flat, fast marksman rifle with a 20-round magazine |
Understand the 75 Health Cap Early
Bandages and First Aid Kits cannot heal you above 75 health. That last quarter only comes back from boost items: an Energy Drink adds 40 boost for roughly 23 health over two minutes, a Painkiller adds 60 for roughly 40 health. New players routinely go into late circles at 75 health without realising why they cannot top up. Carry boosts.
Move Before the Zone Moves You
Rotating late is the most common cause of death after the drop. Start moving as the new circle appears rather than as it closes, so you arrive while good positions are still free. On the 8x8 km maps such as Erangel and Deston that usually means finding a vehicle well before you need one.
Sound Is Information, and You Are Making It
Footsteps, doors, vehicles and gunfire all carry. Use headphones and treat sound as your main sensor — but remember it works both ways. Closing doors behind you, avoiding unnecessary sprinting indoors and parking vehicles away from your position all cost nothing and hide a great deal.
Fight Selection Is a Skill
You do not have to shoot everyone you see. A fight you win at 40 health, in the open, against a squad you have not fully located, is usually a loss in disguise. Ask what winning actually gives you. If the answer is nothing your route needed, moving on is the stronger play.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where should a beginner land in PUBG?
Somewhere you can finish looting. On Erangel that means Rozhok or Novorepnoye for a balanced start, or Gatka and Lipovka if you want near-total safety in exchange for a long rotation. Avoid Pochinki and the Military Base until close combat feels comfortable.
What should I loot first in PUBG?
A weapon with ammunition, then a vest, then a helmet, then a backpack, then medical items, and attachments last. Armour changes survival immediately — a Level 1 vest cuts 30% of incoming body damage, a Level 3 cuts 55%.
Which weapon is best for beginners?
The M416 or SCAR-L. Both fire 5.56mm, deal 40 and 42 damage, and are far easier to control than 7.62mm rifles such as the AKM. Consistency matters more than damage while you are learning recoil.
Why can I not heal above 75 health?
Bandages and First Aid Kits are capped at 75 by design. Boost items are the only way past it: Energy Drinks, Painkillers and Adrenaline Syringes regenerate health over time and can take you to 100.
